My (obvious??) thought is that Canada's vast wild-lands, low population and economic dependence on extraction foster a view of nature as a set of exploitable resources. Similar views were driving factors in the US westward expansion and teh growth of resource-based industries there. I'm sure these views are still prevalent south of the border but they may be ebbing--perhaps due to more-rapid exhaustion of the US supply of nature.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5572572718697589789.post-55958658102877307552009-08-27T22:31:47.073-07:002009-08-27T22:31:47.073-07:00Yesterday on Cherry Point Beach, near Mill Bay, on...Yesterday on Cherry Point Beach, near Mill Bay, on Vancouver Island, we counted over 50 large red jellyfish which had washed up on shore. While we were there we saw three of the same types of jelly fish washed up on shore. one my cousin and i tried to save, we took it into deeper water but the others look and felt more dead and dried. the jelly fish was shaped like a star, it was dark red in the middle, and on the ends it was clear. there was a small circle in the middle of the underside with things like an inch to two inch long tenticle like things but that was the only place the tenticle things were. it was about 30 centimetres all around. if you can tell me what type of jelly fish it was. i would really appreciate it. for the answer or reply could you e-mail me at " noopieyoung_26@hotmail.com " for hte subject could you put jellyfish. thanks - ErinAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5572572718697589789.post-55833970179502522082009-07-14T13:42:43.983-07:002009-07-14T13:42:43.983-07:00The above picture of coral was taken at S.Moresby ...The above picture of coral was taken at S.Moresby while diving at depths from 1158 - 1688 feet. It wakes people up to the sad reality of marine pollution and the fact that the choice is in our hands. In answer to your question, I'd like to see both - side by side. Give people a dose of reality, shock them (perhaps out of their complacency) but also show them the beauty of a pristine (or restored) ecosystem. Reminds us that the future really is in our hands. Thanks for the interesting column!<br />P.S.: now if only our Aquarium wasn't imprisoning captive whales anymore.Cathnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5572572718697589789.post-63240539233163069502009-06-25T16:48:07.847-07:002009-06-25T16:48:07.847-07:00I have lived the past 2 weeks in BC's deep wat...I have lived the past 2 weeks in BC's deep waters vicariously through you.
